Ancestors of the Deaver family arrived in the California gold fields in the early 1850's and by 1857 had settled in the Shenandoah Valley. For 100 years the Deaver family raised cattle, sheep and hogs and farmed grain, vegetables and orchard crops.
Among the properties the Deaver family farmed, were eight acres of Mission grape vines planted in the late 1850's by Ken Deaver's great grandfather and 14 acres of Zinfandel vines first planted around 1886 by John J. Davis, Ken's grandfather.
For decades the Deaver/Davis "old vine grapes" were dry-farmed (no irrigation) and sold exclusively to home winemakers. By 1960 prices for fruit, vegetables and nuts were so low that Ken Deaver's father turned to wine grapes as a potentially profitable crop. For the next several years Deaver planted Zinfandel grapes to sell to home winemakers.
Today Deaver Vineyards covers more than 300 acres and produces some of the most south-after Zinfandel grapes in Amador County. The first vintage of Deaver Vineyards' Zinfandel was bottled under the "Lakeshore" label in 1985. Since then, Deaver Vineyards' Zins have become increasingly recognized as some of Amador County's most respected and popular wines. In addition to Zinfandel, the Deaver Vineyards label graces a variety of red and white wines including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Orange Muscat, Sangiovese, Barbera, and limited bottling of Mourvedre and Syrah.
Deaver Vineyards is also recognized for its outstanding variety of port style fortified wines. Deaver non-vintage, Portuguese varietal, traditional style port has a reputation for unparalleled quality. Deaver also makes vintage Zinfandel Port", an Orange Muscat Port, and Golden Nectar which is a port wine made from the fruit of 150+ year old Mission vines.
Total production of Deaver wines ranges between 2,500 and 3,000 cases per year depending on the availability and quality of fruit.
